In the opening session of UNFCCC on Dec 3, 2007, there was video presentation of Silent Day (Nyepi) in Bali. Indonesia tried to show the world, that there is such tradition which actually support the environment sustainability. ‘Silent Day’ is just one of them.
A country with rich culture and tradition like Indonesia, there should be lots of local wisdom that can support environmental sustainability. In the press conference of Minister of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia in UNFCCC, Jero Wacik, again remind us how local wisdom can support environmental sustainability and also support tourism. In the beginning of press conference which is held at Pavilion Indonesia in Bali International Convention Centre (BICC) today, Jero Wacik explain why Bali elected for the seventh time as the ‘best island in the world’ by one of leading tourism magazine in US. One of the criteria is the value that people experienced during visit. Jero Wacik said that Bali has some of values that suit the environment. Balinese have unique tradition to respect animals on particular day. It shows how Balinese encourage their people to care about animals. Another example as Wacik said, in Bali you can find trees that wrapped around by textile. It expressed how Balinese care for trees. Indonesia has lots more value, which can support environment. Since past centuries, people in Indonesia live in harmony with nature. But time keep changing, and either the world or people. Now is the time for globalization. People around the world influence each other through their own values. There had been changes on Indonesian people values and behavior. Some of them are against the environment sustainability. Still we can’t blame globalization, it happens anyway. But the more important thing is how we can adapt the modern world, especially adapt the local wisdom so it still can be practice by people. Even the world changing, there are some values and knowledge of the past, that still suitable for modern living. Back to Wacik’s press conference, he invited people of the world to visit Indonesia, not only Bali next year, along with ‘Visit Indonesia Year 2008’. When people around the world come to Indonesia, how many carbon foot print that they spent? Don’t even count it! Just be glad that many people still choose beautiful country like Indonesia as tourist destination. But as host, Indonesian people must start thinking how we can still preserve Indonesian nature from now, or it will loose its beauty. Maybe, we must start thinking of local wisdom as one of the way.
