REDD = Moratorium Logging?

The most frequently discussed issue approaching COP 13 in Indonesia is REDD. Environmental NGOs in the grassroots are often questioning this concept.

“REDD has reduced forest’s roles into one, carbon absorber, whereas forest have ecological, social, and cultural function, other than, just, absorbing carbon,” stated Loggena Ginting, activist of Friends of Erath International (FOEI) during International Strategic Meeting (2/12). Meanwhile, in different place, Indonesia’s delegation member Fabby Tumiwa said that REDD is similar to moratorium logging, which frequently addressed by environmental NGOs in Indonesia.

“The difference is that, in REDD we got money compensation, while in moratorium logging we don’t,” he explained. According to Fabby, REDD concept in Indonesia was initiated by Forestry Department, NGO, and World Bank. “World Bank’s involvement has made this REDD issue highly sensitive,” he stated. Civil society’s concerns regarding REDD issue are concerning human rights’ violation by using force and indigenous community’s eviction from their forest area in the name of saving the world’s climate. Those concerns on human rights’ violation in REDD were based on the bad and bloody experiences on the establishment of national park’s area.
