Scientists Warned The Climate Change Conference
 by Renny Turangga

Scientists have knowledge to share. They have auspices that can’t be just ignored.
Five scientists were there to meet the press. At Auditorium Hall of  Bali International Convention Centre (BICC), they held the press conference on Thursday, Dec 06, 2007. The speakers were Professor Mathew England (Australia), Professor Richard Somerville (US), Professor Andrew Pittman (Australia), Professor Diana Liverman (UK) and Dr. Michael Molitor (Policy Advisor Australia).

They came behalf of more than 200 leading climate scientists of the world who signed the 2007 Bali Climate Declaration personally (not represented any organization).  Most of them are from Australia, USA, UK, Germany, France and EU countries or other developed countries in the world. Among them, only 5 scientists from Asia. Two from Japan, two from India, and one from Indonesia (Dr. Jerry Tjiputra).

Here is the summary of the the declaration:a

   1. To avoid greater impact of climate change, we must:

-limit warming till less than 2 degree C

-stabilize concentration below 450 ppm-e in athmosphere

   1. To achieve this we must

-peak and decline global emission in the next 10-15 years

-reduce greenhouse gas emission at least 50% below their 1990 level near 2050

As scientists, they urge the negotiator to reach an agreement that takes the targets as a minimum requirement for a fair and effective global climate aggrement. “”Time is running out. Humanity can not afford a failure in Bali,” said Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf.  Yes, it is. Time is running out. There is still a week to make an agreement that everyone hope the best for human and nature!
